National Geographic Adventure Magazine has Jim Thorpe, PA in its list of the top 100 adventure towns in the USA in its upcoming October 2009 issue:
This unassuming outdoors haven in the Pocono Mountains has 20 trailheads smack in the center of town. Cyclists and hikers share the Gorge Trail, which loops 19 miles past waterfalls and steep canyon walls. Seven ski areas are within a two-hour drive. Big-city perks are close at hand, too, with Philadelphia and New York City just an hour or two away, respectively. Or stay in town: The stellar acoustics of Mauch Chunk Opera House amp up live blues and rock.
The part about 20 trailheads in the middle of town isn’t quite correct, though it may seem like there are that many departure points so close by. The main point is that you can easily hike, ride or raft into the countryside without getting back into your car.
