“Enter for a weekend for two in Jim Thorpe!” is all most of the volunteers at WDIY 88.1 have to say from their booth at Bethlehem MusikFest and CelticFest in order to attract the interest of festival passersby. Then in October of each year the winner is randomly selected out of the hundreds of emails that are submitted at these festivals.
Nearly two million revelers visit Bethlehem each year during MusikFest and CelticFest to enjoy a remarkable array of music, most of it free. WDIY relies on these two events to market their station to hordes of music-lovers.
WDIY and the Mauch Chunk Opera House in Jim Thorpe have partnered for the last five years by cross-promoting each other’s efforts. The Opera House pulls together a package entitling the winner of WDIY’s Weekend for Two contest to two nights at the Inn at Jim Thorpe, dinner both nights (this year Moya and Cafe Origins will be featured), and tickets to a show at the Opera House.
The first year the drawing was held, the winners wound up getting married shortly after their visit. Another year, the winners were wary that there was some sort of catch. Nope, no catch. Just have a good time was what they were told (They opted out of the free massage for two that was scheduled for them at the Soapothecary Salon).
The Opera House benefits in its relationship with WDIY by being promoted in the Lehigh Valley by a growing public radio station with an excellent blend of music and NPR news. WDIY members get $5 off their tickets to any show at the Opera House. If you’re a member, be sure to call ahead and reserve your seats.
