Jim Thorpe joins the world 200th birthday tribute to the great Polish composer Frédéric Chopin on June 12th when pianist Dr. George Halverson Fiore performs a special recital of Chopin’s music in a benefit concert at the Mauch Chunk Opera House on Saturday, June 12 at 8 PM.
Dr. Fiore has recently retired from posts as choral conductor of the Seattle Opera and assistant conductor at the Seattle Symphony, and is a well-known scholar of Chopin, one of the most beloved of the classical masters.
He will play the Opera House 9-foot 1898 Chickering grand piano, an instrument close to the sort of piano Chopin himself would have played.
This performance is a benefit for the Opera House. Ticket sales support capital projects currently in progress at the facility. In the past 2 years the Mauch Chunk Historical Society, which owns and operates the venue, has installed a new roof, seats, carpeting, sound system, and completed a first phase of backstage improvements.
