The Mauch Chunk Opera House presents a rock comedy opening for a one-night-only blowout performance on Saturday, August 21st. Carbon County playwright J. Ferron Hiatt brings home his new play “The Destruction of Doré and Grey” direct from its world-premier performance at the legendary Trocadero Theater in Philadelphia. The cast of actors, musicians and misfits conspire in this witty and sinister tale of love, betrayal, musical voodoo, deception, tyranny, mischief and seduction.
Luzerne County native rock star, Randy Schultz plays Cupid’s troubadour as Grey. Philadelphia comedic actor Bethany Formica plays Doré, Grey’s musical soulmate and keeper of his heart. In a desperate bid to become pop idols, Doré and Grey strike a deal with Santana, played by Bill Lance, and Miss Jones, the Hostess of Hell, played by Philadelphia actor Natalie Layne Kidd. These two denizens of the underworld stop at nothing to crush the love that inspires Doré and Grey’s music and thereby steal away their souls.
J. Ferron Hiatt mines some of rock’s greatest lyrics to pepper the script with salacious humor, wit and romance. A soundscape mash-up created by the Jersey Shore’s musical masters “The Max” and the luminescent Randy Shultz mixes classic sampling from the American pop songbook with dazzling originals of their own creation. Fiddler Perky Gaylord appears as the devil’s delightful demon.
Creating and producing alt-indie theater since 1991, Hiatt writes and directs plays that are laugh-out-loud thrillers. The ordinary and typical are exiled. Each production of “Doré and Grey” is tuned to the players, musicians and venue. The producer of over 20 works of theater and a graduate of Temple University and the University of Iowa’s writing program, Hiatt fearlessly embraces the unconventional and unknown to fashion performances of striking originality.
