Appearing in the paper last week were notices of three new or revised taxes that will affect Jim Thorpe businesses in 2011. They are scheduled to be voted upon by cCouncil at a special meeting on Monday, November 29 at 6:30.
The taxes being voted upon are a 5% amusement tax, a 5% services tax and a $25 occupational tax. In an effort to close long-standing budget gaps, these taxes are being proposed by city manager Wes Johnson.
Jim Thorpe Chamber businesses are disturbed not only by the prospect of new taxes, but by the speed with which they are being put to a vote.
Apparently, the taxes must be approved by the end of November in order to be enacted for 2011.
