On March 22, 2013 the Opera House hosts Native American flute player R. Carlos Nakai and the German-born pianist Peter Kater in a show certain to emphasize the venue’s terrific acoustic qualities, as concert-goers are treated to an especially unique show of meditative pieces by two iconic musicians.
The day begins with The Mountain Spring Wellness Festival, from noon to 5 PM. A fantastic and totally unique way to start Spring co-sponsored by Jim Thorpe Yoga.
Of Navajo-Ute heritage, Nakai has become the world’s premier performer of the Native American flute. Originally trained in classical trumpet and music theory, he was given a traditional cedar wood flute as a gift and challenged to see what he could do with it.
Since 1983, he has released over 35 albums on the Canyon label. In addition to his solo appearances throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan, Nakai has worked with guitarist William Eaton, flutist Paul Horn, composers James DeMars and Phillip Glass and many symphony orchestras. His record Canyon Trilogies is an especially fine example of why Nakai has become such an iconic name in New Age music.
Multi-Platinum selling pianist-composer, Peter Kater, has received 7 Grammy nominations in the last 8 years and has scored over 100 television programs and films including 11 Off and On-Broadway plays. He is also a proud recipient of the prestigious Environmental Leadership Award from the United Nations.
Their collaboration is an amazing opportunity to experience two iconic musicans together, in a venue that is especially friendly to acoustic artists classical to jazz to New Age, and which also houses an 1898 Chickering grand piano, newly refurbished. (Check out our Q&A with Peter Kater)
Peter Kater and R. Carlos Nakai collaborated on two of the best Native-American inspired CDs of all time, “Honorable Sky” and “Natives”. .. Peter Kater’s melodic piano stylings are a wonderful complement to the soft, haunting woodwind from R. Carlos Nakai. When these two musicians perform together, the result is a flavorful, gentle window into time and landscape. –Amazon Review
