She’s tall and thin and from her looks you wouldn’t know that Carmella Heard brings so much Epicurean cheer to the Mauch Chunk Opera House refreshment booth.
But that’s what she does, night after night. She comes in before a show, and everyone else comes over to check out what the featured goodies are that she’s brought for that evening.
“Believe me, we know our good fortune,” says Opera House co-proprietor Dan Hugos. On this particular night, there was something new: an orange, blueberry coffee cake. Not too sweet, not too tart, neither heavy nor light – just right.
All venues have friendly volunteers, but at the Opera House, they seem to do them all one better.
“We can boast about it legitimately,” says Hugos. “Name me one other place with homemade goodies, and really, really friendly people to serve it to you? And a slice of cake or a gigantic cookie will only set you back three bucks.”
That’s a nice way to enjoy a show.
Carmella hadn’t brought us (or I should say, the audience) coffee cake before.
“I never actually eat what I make,” says Carmella. “I just love the process of baking and creating it. ”
OK, fair enough I guess, though most would find it mighty tempting.
“Did it come out OK?”
“Yes, real, real good,” Hugos says nodding emphatically, in between bites.
