Dugan’s General Store has been at its current location on 60 Broadway, just up the street from the Inn at Jim Thorpe, since September of 1954, say Jim and Jack Dugan, the store’s proprietors. They have long been the first contacts for many a resident and visitor here in Jim Thorpe and everyone’s trusted ears and eyes as to what was going on in town.
Bought from St. Mark’s Church the year the town changed its name from Mauch Chunk to Jim Thorpe, the house was then turned into a home and the general store so well-known to its residents today. Anyone living on the west side (and many from the east side) of town went to Dugan’s for the newspaper, lottery tickets, smokes, a loaf of bread or carton of milk, their fix of Ben and Jerry’s.
So, while it is truly poignant to see Jack and Jim Dugan going and their fixture of a store shutting its doors this week, we fondly wish them both the best, all of us the better for knowing them and for having had the good fortune of so often dropping by their store.
We won’t soon forget the many laughs and great conversations that one could expect at 9 AM when they’d open, or at 10 PM when their welcomes have always been a constant from behind the counter.
Jack and Jim Dugan – thanks for everything, we wish you success in future endeavors, and we are privileged to know you. While change is the only constant, you know how it is around here in Jim Thorpe: you can check out any time you like but you can never leave. We’re glad for that.
