Summer 2012 in Jim Thorpe is especially notable for all kinds of entertainment options in town, at the The Mauch Chunk Opera House, a 380-seat venue in downtown Jim Thorpe, and Penn’s Peak, accommodating 1800 and only three easy miles away.
Mauch Chunk Opera House
The Opera House is just a block or two from downtown accommodations and restaurants, and features a broad variety nationally-touring acts, from rock and singer-songwriter to jazz to classical. It has recently completed extensive renovations, as well as the addition of a wine and beer bar.
It’s a relaxed scene with pleasant volunteers, easy to stroll over after dinner, all seats are close to the action, and there’s plenty of opportunity to meet the performers after the show.
July brings acts like Sierra Hull and Highway 111, a world-class bluegrass outfit (Ms. Hull is also known for her many appearances with Alison Krauss), Red Horse: John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky, and Eliza Gilkyson appearing together as a virtual folk supergroup, Dancin’ Machine – a summer disco dance party, a capella with the Persuasions (discovered on a Brooklyn street corner by Frank Zappa), Solas, an atmospheric Irish band considered one of the finest Celtic groups anywhere, and Hot Buttered Rum, known for their high-altitude blue-jamgrass.
Suzanne Vega and the Cowboy Junkies highlight August with dates on the 10th and 17th respectively. Other fine performers include the Ryan Montbleau Band, Michael Kaeshammer Trio, and Jeffrey Gaines helping round out an exciting schedule. Click here for more info.
Penn’s Peak features an adjacent restaurant, and a lively night scene with their famous and frequent summer deck parties on weekends. They’re popular with visitors and residents alike.
July and August brings The Yonder Mountain String Band (jamband favorites), Jim Messina (formerly of Loggins and Messina, and Poco), The 7 Walkers (Grateful Dead members), and Vince Gill (country music star) to the stage.
