To recognize the talented Canadian alt-folk, roots trio The Wailin’ Jennys‘ appearance at the Mauch Chunk Opera House on Friday, July 30, Jim Thorpe Borough Council President John McGuire will present them with the keys to the city at Soundcheck Records. The store is located 2 blocks from the Opera House, and the event takes place at 5 PM before the show.
It’s a great opportunity to meet a charming and deeply talented group that regularly performs on Garrison Keillor’s popular A Prairie Home Companion. Their 8:30 show at the Opera House will mark their first return to town since the release of their classic 2009 live album, Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House.
Amazingly the album was recorded in one take, on the occasion of an August 2008 concert. One of the classic tunes is Calling All Angels, an oft-interpreted Jane Siberry tune, that the Jennys turn into a classic. Have a listen to get a feel for the entire album which David Lindley, the Jackson Browne guitarist, called maybe “the finest sounding live album I’ve ever heard!”
That’s high praise from a musician who was part of a pretty good live album himself – Jackson Browne’s 1977 mega-recording Running on Empty. With the Jennys’ flawless 3-part harmonies, easy commentary from the stage, and their remarkable songwriting and musicianship, it’s easy to see why they have acquired so many devoted fans in the music business and around the world.
You can also hear them live on WDIY 88.1 on Thursday, July 29. They will visit the studio as part of the The Blend at either 2 PM or 3 PM depending on when they get into town from New York City.
