We’re Around the Proverbial Corner
Jim Thorpe is not a plane ride away. It’s just an enjoyable spin from wherever you are, and a leisurely drive here can be a special treat. All restaurants are an easy walk from each other, and from your accommodations.
If you live in Philadelphia, it is a surprisingly short ride up the Northeast Extension. From the Lehigh Valley, you can take easy back roads or the toll road for a ride to the other side of Blue Mountain. From New Jersey, just head up Routes 78 or 80. From the Scranton/Wilkes Barre area, shoot down the Northeast Extension (476).
Piece of cake. Jim Thorpe feels far away, but it’s not at all.
Restaurant Choices Galore
Check out the Broadway Grille, adjacent to the Inn at Jim Thorpe, for its lovely decor and outstanding food. New Executive Chef Zoraida Rivera has completely revised the breakfast and dinner menus (here’s their TV ad).
Moya, a Carbon County favorite that is named after head chef Heriberto Yunda’s hometown in Ecuador, serves elegant food in a casual, painterly atmosphere (you’ll see what we mean). The food is outstanding, the atmosphere relaxed – so it fits JT perfectly. Here’s a review from the Allentown Morning Call’s Susan Gottshall.
Tony Stella’s Encore, serves the finest Italian cuisine right downtown on 66 Broadway. Your senses will be delighted by Tony’s carefully crafted lunch, dinner, and cocktail menus, as well as an atmosphere of class, luxury, and romantic appeal. Check out their new video here.
Speaking of Italian, a couple of minutes outside of Jim Thorpe is a special jewel of a place called Macaluso’s at the Lantern. A favorite haunt of local politicians and businesspeople, its innovative Italian and Continental dishes are served in a relaxed and newly-renovated dining room adjacent to a lively bar area. Also, there’s a shuttle service on Friday and Saturdays from downtown Jim Thorpe and back, available from 5 PM till 10 PM both Friday and Saturday evening, and extended during the JT Fall Festival to Sunday nights, the first three weeks in October!
The New Mollie Maguire’s Pub and Steakhouse helped begin the emergence of outstanding food in Jim Thorpe when it opened in 1990 and is well-known for its 24-ounce steak.
Wheel, located just below the Mauch Chunk Opera House on Broadway, is already renowned for it’s remarkable lobster mac and other goodies on its unique menu.
For something more casual, there’s Bear Appetit right downtown (across from the hotel) for a fine menu of home-cooking for breakfast, lunch, and dinner – perfect for the family. Food is served by friendly people in an informal atmosphere – come as you are. Or simply pull in for some inexpensive Italian entrees or pizza at Antonio’s Restaurant just a couple of doors up Broadway.
Newly opened is the Stone Row Pub & Eatery on Race Street in the 1845 Stone Row just a block off Broadway. Their menu is reasonably priced, and focused on offering eclectic food for anyone, whether they’re folks with allergies or dietary preferences, or simply carefree omnivores. Get together with friends at their atmospheric lounge upstairs!
On your way here on 209S, with less than a mile from town, visit The Bagel Bunch just before you descend the hill into Jim Thorpe for an excellent variety of fresh-baked bagels, and all sorts of sandwiches and wraps for breakfast or lunch (and even a B&B, only a mile from town, right above the restaurant, and nice).
Back in town, some casual alternatives and places to be sure to visit include Rainbow’s End, an old-fashioned candy store that our city friends repeatedly notice has especially good chocolate and licorice, inexpensive lunches, and all sorts of other treats, including an ice cream stand – not to mention the friendly service that comes with the goodies. And don’t miss The House of Jerky right downtown, right next to the Inn at Jim Thorpe. Not only is it a great new addition to town, with super-nice folks, you’ll find great jerky – check it out!
